"Birlik" activists in Swedish Parliament
Yesterday, "Birlik" Party vice-chairman Pulat Ohun and the Party activist Anvar Karim had two important meetings at the Swedish Parliament - Rigstag.
The first meeting was with the Swedish delegation's vice-chairman deputy in the European Organization for Security and Cooperation, Tone Tingsrad. The meeting's main subjects were the social-political situation in Uzbekistan, activities of "Birlik" party as the main oppositional organization under the pressure of dictatorship regime of president Islam Karim, and issues of democracy and human rights in the country. The member of Swedish Parliament thanked them for the valued information, and promised to discuss this subject with the European Organization for Security and Cooperation's proper body. There was a decision to periodically organize these kinds of meetings.
Then “Birlik” members met with Turk deputy of the Swedish Parliament, Mehmet Kaplan. Pulat Ohun talked to him about the relationship between Turkish politicians and Uzbek oppositioners. He also mentioned himself and the leader of the party Abdurahim Pulat, who in August 1991, in the eve of Moscow coup, met with Suleyman Demirel.
During the conversation they talked about the recently accepted resolution in Rigstag regarding the Armenian genocide. Mehmet Kaplan did not vote for it. In connection with it, Pulat Ohun recalled Russia's policy of sending Armenian Dashnaks to Central Asia to suppress Uzbek uprising against Russians in the junction of 19th and 20th centuries.
Mehmet Kaplan was interested in Birlik’s history and its activities in the last years, especially, Birlik’s lawful but unsuccessful activities to be registered as a legal opposition party. As a real democrat, he appeared ready to help change the Uzbek government’s and the opposition parties relationship and to reduce the flame of fire in between. It was decided to do concrete actions in this way.
As a deputy of the Swedish parliament, he is a member of the "Green" party, so they discussed the environmental and ecological problems as well. They also discussed the water deficit in the Central Asia region, the problems between Uzbekistan-Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan-Tajikistan, in particular the problems of construction of Rogun Hydro Power Station in Tajikistan.
