What is the reason of UN’s General Secretary visit to Tashkent?
There is no official informational about this event. The state's official news agency UzA distributed some information about Paun Gi Mun's visit to Karakalpakstan and his plan to stop by at Tashkent. After this they forgot about the guest.
Information Agency "Jahon" of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs just informed the public of the welcome speech given early morning at 7:15 in the Russian language by Islam Karim to UN's General Secretary Paun Gi Mun. From this it is obvious they met a day earlier and there is no additional info about where and what happened at the meeting.
Islam Karim, the most, in his 10-minute speech praised Paun Gi Mun and talked some of the Aral sea catastrophe and also of Afganistan.
He mentioned the Aral Sea’s history of drying up and did no say anything about Uzbekistan's plans are in solving this issue.
Talking about Afghanistan he repeated his thought of creating "6+3" contact group within UN.
Even though he repeatedly mentioned his idea of the contact group consisting of governments like the USA, Russia and members of UN, nobody would hear him. Beside himself of course.
Foreign news agencies informed the public of the given lecture by Paun Gi Mun to the students of University of World Economy and Diplomacy, where he noted in passing about the democracy and human rights tasks.
General Secretary met with journalists after noon and flew to Dushanbe, Tajikistan. He said nothing worthy to journalists.
According to "Harakat" agency reporters, the UN General Secretary's visit would not be of significance.
It would be wrong to expect more from Paun Gi Mun, because the functions of the UN are totally different. In order to develop a democratic system in Uzbekistan, Uzbek democratic opposition can rely on Western assistance but have to do much of the work itself.
