President of Uzbekistan to visit Seoul
Uzbek President Islam Karimov plans to visit Korea next week to discuss bilateral and international issues, the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae said yesterday.
Karimov is to arrive Feb. 10 for a three-day visit, officials said. The trip was planned to reciprocate President Lee Myung-bak's visit to Uzbekistan in May last year.
"President Karimov's state visit is expected to bolster a strategic partnership between the two nations and develop the Korean government's New Asia Diplomacy," Cheong Wa Dae said.
President Lee Myung-bak has been promoting this diplomatic campaign with the aim of pursuing closer relations with regional partners in Asia.
While in Seoul, Karimov is expected to explore the possibility of joint economic projects and other ways for promoting bilateral cooperation when he meets President Lee next Thursday.
The cooperation is to include projects such as a joint efforts to develop a gas field in Surgil of Uzbekistan and refurbish Navoi airport to turn it into an international logistical hub.
Areas of agriculture, environment and culture may also see further cooperation between the two nations, aides said.
Karimov will also meet Prime Minister Chung Un-chan, National Assembly Speaker Kim Hyong-o, Finance Minister Yoon Jeung-hyun, and other political and business leaders during his visit. // Korea Herald
