Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan reaffirm policy for full cooperation
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, who arrived in Turkmenistan on an official visit, held talks in Ashgabat on December 13. The visit of the Uzbek leader is timed to the opening of the Turkmenistan - China gas pipeline the route of which passes through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
According to the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH), the two leaders expressed the profound satisfaction with the progressive development of bilateral relations and reaffirmed their countries' policies for a full-fledged cooperation.
Noting that the advantageous geographical location of both countries contributes to the successful combining of their capacities, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov suggested that the relevant structures of the two countries should work in a systematic way to create a programme that could become a peculiar "road map" for cooperation in the sphere of road, rail and air transport.
Stressing the importance of the traditional Turkmen-Uzbek humanitarian cooperation, the Turkmen leader proposed to consider the possibility of holding a festival of friendship of the two peoples in Dashoguz province of Turkmenistan in the spring of 2010.
On the results of talks in Ashkhabad, the sides signed a package of bilateral documents. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Islam Karimov signed a Protocol on Amending the Agreement between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan on mutual visits of citizens and on simplified procedures for citizens living in border areas of 19 November 2004, as well as a Joint Turkmen-Uzbek statement.
There were also signed a cooperation programme between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2010-2011 and an Agreement between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan on the joint Turkmen-Uzbek commission for trade-economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation. // Turkmenistan.ru
