United States includes Uzbek cotton into the list of the products made through forced child labor
According to BBC radio which did not mention any source, US Department of Labor updated its database of products made through forced minors' labor, and included Uzbek cotton into the list. The annual list contains 29 products from 29 countries over the world. Among them are carpets made in Nepal and Pakistan, electric devices and toys made in China and others.
One of the reasons for Uzbekistan's cotton being on the list is the report of tens of nongovernmental and human rights organizations and news agencies. The list is based on the "Prohibition of production using forced children's labor" decree adopted in US in 1999.
On December 2009, Uzbekistan president Islam Karimov signed one more proposed legislation restricting child labor and Uzbekistan parliament chamber also accepted one more law about restricting forced child labor. But, human rights activists have shown their doubts that any change will actually occur.
